Stuart Ordman
Head Varsity Coach

 

Coach Ordman is married with two children, Nina, 25, and Allison, 20.  Ginny, his wife, currently teaches Introduction to Journalism, Yearbook and pre-algebra at Iowa City West High School. She is a Cedar Rapids West-Sider, a graduate of La Salle High School. Coach Ordman is a graduate of New Trier East High School in Winnetka, Illinois. He earned his B.A. degree from the University of Iowa and M.A. degree from St. Mary’s College.  Coach Ordman played on the New Trier High School basketball team that pulled off several upsets and finished second in the Illinois state basketball tournament.

He began his teaching and coaching career at Central High School (KC, MO). He taught sophomore and junior English and coached freshmen boys for one season and varsity girls for three.  Coach Ordman next taught and coached at Leavenworth, Kansas. He helped coach sophomore boys’ team for one year and the girls’ varsity for seven years. The girls’ varsity teams he coached won the school’s first state basketball championships in 1988 and repeated in 1989. The 1990 team finished in the final four.

Last year’s squad battled injuries and remained competitive. The J-Hawks defeated two state-bound teams, Cedar Falls and Iowa City West.

Coach Ordman is in his 13th year at Jefferson.  He teaches physical education, including Adaptive PE.  He is excited about the 2009-2010 team’s potential.  He directs a number of basketball camps for boys in the summer.

 

Carey Ash
Assistant Varsity Coach

Coach Ash is in his 21st year on the basketball staff at Jefferson High School.  He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa and his MA from Coe College in 2000.  He teaches physical education and also serves as the activities coordinator at Wilson Middle School.  He has coached 8th grade football at Wilson for the last 7 years. He also coaches girl’s track at Wilson. Carey is married to Jean, an eighth grade teacher at Taft Middle School.  They have a daughter Emily who is 14, and Is a ninth grade cheerleader for the J-Hawks. They also have a son Austin age 11, who plays for a sixth grade team that is named the J-Hawks.  Coach Ash is currently coaching his son’s team.

Carey and his family enjoy spending time with family and friends, and are avid Hawkeye fans and enjoy supporting all J-Hawk activities.

 

 


Tony Campbell
Assistant Varsity Coach

Coach Tony Campbell is in his second year on the Jefferson basketball coaching staff. He graduated from Regis High School in 1993 with All-State honors in football and basketball. He obtained his B.A. in elementary education from Luther College where he starred for the Men’s Basketball team finishing as the 6th all-time leading scorer.

After college, he taught Physical Education at Johnson Elementary and coached Men’s Basketball and Women’s Track at Washington High School. In 2004, Tony and his family moved to Las Vegas, NV where he taught middle school Science and coached club basketball for the Legendary Tarkanian Family.

Tony currently teaches Wellness at Wilson Middle School. He and his wife Jennifer have three children: Teyshawn, 9th grade, plays Varsity Basketball for the J-Hawks; Teeyha, 7th grade, enjoys singing and plays basketball; and Tyger 3rd grade, plays AAU ball for the state champion 3rd grade J-Hawks.





Lucas Ptacek
Head Sophomore Coach

Coach Lucas Ptacek currently teaches Sixth Grade Social Studies at Roosevelt Middle School. He is in his fifth year of teaching after graduating from Coe College in May 2005 and recently received his Masters in K-12 Administration from the University of Northern Iowa. He was a four-year member of the Kohawk football team and choir.

Lucas played football, basketball, and ran track at Jefferson. He was football captain and all-conference selection as well as 2nd team All-State. He was voted class president each of his four years! While at Jefferson, Lucas was a member of Westside Delegation, Concert Choir, and Meistersingers. He was a Special Olympics volunteer and a Read-Along Mentor. This is Lucas’ tenth year in the J-Hawk basketball program and fourth as the sophomore head coach. He has been assistant coach on the varsity football staff for one year, and the freshman staff for three.


Brandon Horman
Assistant Sophomore Coach

Coach Brandon Horman currently teaches 4th Grade at Wilson School. Brandon also coaches 8th grade football at Wilson. He is in his third year of teaching after graduating from Mt. Mercy College in 2007. He was a member of the Mount Mercy Men’s Basketball Team.

Brandon was a 3-year varsity letter-winner in basketball and a 4-year varsity-letter winner in golf at Calamus-Wheatland High School. Brandon is a member of the schools 1,000 point club, and is the schools all-time leading re-bounder. In March of 2009 Brandon's wife Jess is a Cardiovascular Sonographer at St. Lukes Hospital. Brandon enjoys spending time with Jess and his family. He also enjoys supporting the Iowa Hawkeye’s.





Brian Erbe
Head Freshman Blue Coach

Coach Erbe is a 1972 graduate of Jefferson High School who participated in baseball, basketball, and football. He is currently the school’s Attendance Facilitator, and has been a coach in various sports for the past 16 years.

This is his 7th year as a freshman coach in the men’s basketball program. Coach Erbe was on the football staff for eleven years and the head freshman coach for five years, he also coached track for 6 years.

Brian and his wife Earlene have been married for 34 years and have three children, each a Jefferson graduate. Dan, 31, is medically retired from the Marine Corps. He resides in South Carolina and works for the U.S. Government. Elizabeth, 28, is married to Nathan Wulff. Their daughter, Lilli was born in January of 2004. Andrew was born in May 2007. Stephanie, 26, is a 2005 graduate of Clarke College and is currently teaching at Harding Middle School. She was married in May 2005 to Tim Davis and they have 2 sons, Caden and Carter.


Nathan Wulf
Assistant Freshman Blue Coach

Coach Nathan Wulff is a 1996 graduate of Cedar Rapids Washington. He participated in basketball each of his four years in high school. He earned a B.A. from the University of Iowa as a psychology major. Nathan is married to Elizabeth Erbe, a Jefferson graduate. They are the proud parents of Lillian, born in January of 2004, and Andrew born in May 2007. This is Nathan’s 7th year with the J-Hawks and he is excited about the opportunity to contribute to Jefferson basketball.

 

 





Tom Hodges
Head Freshman White Coach

Coach Tom Hodges is a 1991 graduate of LaSalle High School. He participated and received multiple honors in football, basketball, and golf. Tom is a UNI alumnus where he received his BA in Physical Education. He later earned his Masters Degree from Coe College.

Tom has been a physical education teacher at Van Buren Elementary School for the past eleven years. He has coached basketball, at the junior high level for Holy Family Middle School and Taft Middle School, and also assistant varsity at Jefferson. He has also coach football at Taft the past six years. Tom is married to Stacey, who works as an operational therapist in Vinton, Iowa. They have two sons, Cael, ,5 and Payton, 3. As a family they enjoy spending time together and staying active in sports.


Carlton Saunders
Assistant Freshman White Coach

Coach Carlton Saunders was born in London, England. He lived in Toronto, Ontario for 11 years and Tampa, Florida during his high school years. Carlton graduated from William Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He and his family have made Cedar Rapids their home since 1991.

Carlton is married to Kathie and has two sons, Lucas and Alec. Lucas is an honor- roll senior and a member of the varsity swim team. Alec is an honor-roll freshman and a member of the sophomore basketball team.

This is Carlton’s first year with the Jefferson basketball team although he has coached youth teams for several years. In his roles as a boys basketball volunteer coach and as the football varsity tight-ends coach, Carlton enjoys the opportunity to teach fundamentals and shape young men’s attitudes on and off the court.
